Becoming an Iceberg

30th June, 2020

Dear members,

As unfortunate as it is, we will not be able to commence the Winter Swimming season in July due to the current NSW COVID-19 restrictions.

As in the previous months, we will continue to be guided by government regulations. I still remain optimistic that we can come together as a Club, on a Sunday morning, possibly in August and or September.

In regard to Swimming Members in their 5 years and 75 swims journey, discussion are commencing and we’re considering a few different scenarios. While decisions are yet to be made, further information will be revealed in the near future once we observe how restrictions evolve over the next two months.

As you are aware, the Icebergs Pool has now reopened under the Government regulations and already many Members have enjoyed a swim in our iconic ocean pool.

Also, a number of Bergs have been getting together at beaches across the eastern suburbs for a Sunday morning dip. With the licensed Club reopening in the coming days, I look forward to “social distancing” with many of you either upstairs in our great Club or on the Pool Deck.

Stay safe and remember, cold water is all we need!

australia’s most iconic winter swimming club…

The Bondi Icebergs swim on Sundays between May and September.

Prospective swimming members must be proposed by a current, long service swimming member, and seconded by another current, long service swimming member.

  • Swimmers must compete three Sunday’s out of four for a period of five years.
  • Icebergs swimming season is from May until September
  • If a swimming member fails to swim on at least 3 Sundays they must provide a written letter of explanation before the end of the relevant month. This is known as the Historic Rule 15B

Historic Rule 15B

If a swimming member fails to provide a written explanation as required, the Swimming committee may send the member a letter or email (which may be referred to as a 15B letter) requesting the member to contact the Race Recorder to explain why they failed to meet the swimming requirement.

If a member does not comply with the 15B letter the Swim Committee may suspend the member from all Club swimming events and request the member be transferred to Social Membership of the Club. Or they may suspend the member from all Club swimming events and forward to the Board recommending the member be removed from the Club’s Register of Members for a period of up to 12 months.
